Vonnegut's writing style was akin to Fred Astaire's dancing: it looks so damn easy, so elegantly simple -- until you try to mimic it and fall flat on your face.
That last quote is a perfect example. Upon reading it, our first instict is to laugh, then go ooh with the recognition of how many people we know who have been so aptly described.* And then the sinking feeling that comes with the final nail being hit: the realization that, at one time or another, we were one of those people.
